Blues was created witin the African-American communities in the US Deep South at the end of the 19th century.  It was derived from spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads.  The blues form provided a foundation for jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll.
