It was Ladies of the Eighties night at Stir Cove on Friday. The leg warmers, the neon, the crimped hair and pony tails, the prom dresses – they all made their presence known. It was a night of pure entertainment and fun. It was Tiffany and Debbie Gibson. Does it get any better than that?
I was so pumped when I found out they were touring and then for Stir Cove to bring them here was just icing on the cake. They took to the stage with a strong and vigorous opening – then each had their chance to shine.
I was ready for Tiffany to sing “I Think We’re Alone Now” or “I Saw Him Standing There”, but I was totally not prepared for the fantastic covers of Mellencamp, Nicks and Macentire. Whoa baby – this sweet little teen sensation has a set of pipes that just blew me away. She has the strength, the guts and the vocals that remind me of ladies like Grace Slick and Janis Joplin. Now – that’s saying a lot. She just rocked my world and I was not only bowled over, I was in awe. She even stated that she had caught cold and wasn’t at 100%. Well, if the show I saw last night wasn’t 100% - I can only imagine what this woman is capable of. While she claims her heart is deep within country music, Tiffany could sing the label off of a soup can and it would sound like an anthem. Truly – she was so impressive, that I had to pinch myself. She played to and with the audience, and their appreciation was gracious and sincere. We were on our feet, we were singing, dancing and reminiscing. Her band is incredible, and her back up singer is simply amazing. What a great hour of my life.
After a very brief break, the youngest artist to write, produce and perform a number one single shook her love onto the Stir Cove stage and stole the hearts of her fans once again. I wonder how much Electric Youth perfume was sprayed on Friday night? Debbie Gibson is an artist. She is a performer. She is an entertainer. Her set saw a number of upbeat and well-choreographed dance numbers with two very talented young male dancers flanking Gibson. It is quite apparent that Gibson has done a significant amount of theater work, and it is all to her credit. She has strong vocals and supreme stage presence. Best of all, she knows how good the 80’s treated her, and has learned to embrace and appreciate that time of her life. And the woman has a body to die for – I wish I could buy her abs! Every hit I remember being played over and over and over and over in my house during the 80’s made it’s way into her performance. It was high energy and so darn much fun.
The crowd itself was so entertaining. Honestly, I wish I had the gumption to don an old neon t-shirt, or that adorable scrunchie. Those that did were not ridiculed, but revered. Yes, the ladies dominated Friday night – both on and off the stage. I would NOT have missed this love fest for anything. Thank you Stir Cove – you continue to rock my world.
