    Blues Traveler Delivers!

I owe a lot to Blues Traveler – if it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have such a great gig with omahanightlife.com.   A few years ago, I turned in a review of the Princeton, New Jersey band and I’ve been going strong ever since.  So, when I saw they were going to perform at the Whiskey Roadhouse, I just couldn’t pass up the chance to pay homage once again.

What a great night it was.  John Popper and troupe were in fine form, having just come off their gig at Bonnaroo.  It was song after song of blues, jazz, jam and rock, and no one does it like Popper.  His unique musical delivery and harmonica prowess was as stunning as always.  I am always awed by the energy that vibrates from his band, especially from the brothers Kinchla – his wing men on lead guitar and bass.  Those boys are bouncing and jumping and everyone is having a great time, audience included.  It was nearly non-stop for an hour and a half or so, and I was doing my own form of bouncing and jumping just like the rest of the predominantly male crowd.

I had a great view for the entire show, and one thing that never ceases to interest me is how Popper gets away with his smoke breaks in a non-smoking venue.  I’m sure the attendees think it’s a great time for showcasing some of the band – great solos by the keyboardist, the drummer, the guitar players – I somehow find it a little off-putting.  It’s probably in the contract – and who am I to question – I just find it odd.

Nevertheless, the music was fine and I got my kicks from hits like ‘Run Around’ and ‘But Anyway’ and  a fabulous rendition of Charlie Daniels’ ‘Devil Went Down to Georgia’ where Popper’s harmonica sounded eerily like Charlie’s fiddle.  It was a great show and a great time.

Opening for BT was a band I had never seen nor heard of – Elmwood.  Wow, they were amazing!  I just stood there dumbstruck watching the instrumental talents of the sax player and drummer.  Loved it!  This band would remind you of the Dave Matthews Band, and that isn’t a bad thing.  I am gonna do my research and find a chance to see these guys again.  They did a 30-40 minute gig, and had the crowd revved.

Whiskey Roadhouse is a GREAT venue.  Tucked into the corner of the Horseshoe Casino, it’s an intimate and cozy retreat with great acoustics.  The staff is friendly and warm and the cocktail service is frequent and efficient.  I will be back there next week for JJ Grey and Mofro – I recommend you do the same!
