Review of Carolina Liar and David Cook

Whiskey Roadhouse was a hoppin’ place Saturday night, and I was so thrilled to be amongst the throngs.  The air was feverish with the anticipation of an evening with Carolina Liar and David Cook.

Carolina Liar, an LA –based band who has toured extensively with the likes of Rob Thomas and One Republic, took the stage promptly at 8 pm and for nearly an hour they hit it hard with their spin on alternative and rock music.  It was so, so good.  They were friendly and interactive.  They played hard and they played loud.  The audience was really into it and sang along to their hits like “Show Me What I’m Looking For” and “I’m Not Over”.  There was a mass of bodies from the stage to the soundboard, and they ran the gamut of ages and genders.  It was a huge coming together for pure fun and music appreciation.  Carolina Liar played at Stir within the last couple of years and that, too, was great.  But, the chance to be close in the intimate environment of the Whiskey Roadhouse made their sound and their message even more enjoyable.  The boys have only been around since 2006, but they are definitely being heard.  That was evident by the ardent admirers on Saturday night.  I wish them much continued success, and I for one will be among the admirers the next time they hit our metro area.

After a very brief intermission, the decibel level in the venue heated up once again as the likes of Mr. David Cook and his band took to the Roadhouse stage for what proved to be an hour and ½ of fun and high energy.  American Idol may have given him the opportunity to find his musical platform, but Cook has taken the ball into his own hands and is running away with it. He has such a fine voice, and his musical talents are endless.  He and his band gave it their all for the audience, and they let him know they were grateful with loud praises, much clapping and whistling.  Cook did his own take on some great covers, but also shared tunes from his second album, released in June of this year.  And, of course, the night wouldn’t have been complete without his platinum hit “Light On” which was sung in unison among the crowd.  Cook bantered easily with the fans and seemed to be truly enjoying the moment.  I’m sure there are many such moments in a ‘rock star’s’ life, but I’m grateful that David was willing and able to share his holiday weekend with us. Must be that wonderful Midwestern upbringing!   To me, his voice is getting stronger and has more clarity.  This is no flash in the pan Idol winner – we WILL be hearing from David for a very long time.

Whiskey Roadhouse is a great venue.  It’s easy, it’s cozy and the staff is friendly.  Keep your eyes open for more great musical adventures in this stellar location.  I’ll see you there!
