I get a little confused when trying to sort out the members and configurations of The English Beat and The Beat – they’re a bit intertwined; yet one band plays predominantly in the UK, and one in the States. Bottom line, however, is that no matter which ‘Beat’ you’re into, you are sure to enjoy a happy dance party kind of night.
Friday night at the Whiskey Roadhouse was the locale, and The English Beat’s blend of ska, reggae and soul is just as much fun now as it was thirty years ago. There is nothing but positive energy flowing between performers and fans. Their lyrics scream of social justice, love and unity, and between their musical messages is a smattering of poetic missives in the same vein. This band not only vocalizes their appreciation for diversity, the band members themselves are a unique blend of ethnicities. Bravo!!!
What a way to start the Fall/Winter season at the Roadhouse! No one left the venue without a smile on their face. There were jumping, clapping, screaming and sing along moments throughout the event. The boys shared their standards like I Confess, Tears of a Clown and the crowd favorite, Hands Off…She’s Mine. My favorite tunes are the ones with the hard driving beats and the wailing saxophone, but all of it is so upbeat and reassuring, that it fills your soul with optimism and joy.
It was delightful to watch the dancing bodies bouncing around the room. Afterall, how can one sit still with all that upbeat rhythm going on? Men, women, couples, singles, multicultural composites – the beauty of this night was the blending together to celebrate.
The Roadhouse is such a great place. I’m a huge fan of the intimate arenas, and the fact that you can almost always wangle your way to the front and bond with the band is such a big plus. I recommend you stay tuned to the Whiskey Roadhouse website and check out upcoming events; it’s a perfect way to avoid the winter blues!
