Don’t you savor happy, smiley, fun-filled nights?  Spend the evening with The Flaming Lips and that’s exactly what you’ll get.  This is my third exposure to the alternative rockers out of Norman, Oklahoma, and it never grows old. 

Stir Cove was aglow with a huge disco ball, saturated with confetti strips and rainbow colored with balloons and a non-stop video stream.  Add Wayne Coyne’s infamous space ball entrance and the night is a non-stop, upbeat, downright love fest. 

For over 25 years these guys have shared the fun with audiences at festivals and venues across the nation, which has led them to be esteemed by Q magazine as being one of the “50 Bands to See Before You Die” and they have earned three Grammy awards to boot! 

For two hours it’s a cosmic, synthesized explosion of catchy tunes.  Audience participation is a huge part of the entire scene, and at every concert several members of the crowd have the honor of dancing on stage with the band. Thursday night they were hangin’ with little Mr. Sunshine and Mr. Toad – just two of the myriad of characters I have seen at a Lips concert.

I would bet there weren’t more than a handful of attendees sitting in their little chairs – you just can’t do that at a Flaming Lips concert.  You gotta be on your feet, swaying, singing, dancing, whatever – the time seems to fly by but the energy never leaves.

I met a guy who knew nothing about the Lips – he said he almost didn’t go to the concert.  Thank goodness he thought again – he said it was “fantastic” and he was thrilled he hadn’t missed a beat.  He said this while smiling ear to ear – that’s what the Lips do for ya.

The Flaming Lips should be on EVERYONE’s bucket list.  If you see one show, you will know why.  Stir Cove hits another home run with this band.
