Review of Girl Talk at Stir Cove

What a great way to end the season at Stir Cove!  It was one big dance party kind of night.  Girl Talk brought his manic, mashup style to the Cove and the crowd was way into it.

Girl Talk, aka Gregg Gillis, is a controversial musician to say the least.  He takes several songs and melds them together, into a new and more obscure blend.  It’s like a new hip-hop, funk, electronic, dance song that you think you know – or at least you know parts of – but it sounds so different.  Gillis’ popularity is soaring, and his creativity is interesting. He’s pushing the envelope and the buttons of a few artists, and it will be interesting to see what the future brings for this former engineer from Pittsburgh.  Do you think the Grammys will add a category for best sound from a laptop?

Along with the techno sound, the evening included confetti guns, glow sticks and a big tee-pee session with tons of toilet paper rolls making their way into the crowd.  A host of attendees were invited on stage to shake their booties – and that they did.

This was by far the youngest crowd at the Cove, and they had a great time.  Hands in the air, screaming, movin’ and groovin’ great time.  There was a mere smattering of chairs in the venue Thursday night, as everyone seemed to be up and shaking it.

So, maybe I don’t totally get it – but whoever else was in the Cove Thursday night did.  Kudos once again to Stir Cove management for being on the cutting edge and giving the metro area a chance to experience new and different acts.

Alas, it has been one heck of a season at the Cove this year.  I had a fantastic time, and the staff and crew should be commended for all their hard work.  Every night at Stir is a good one.  There were a few unexpected obstacles this year (uh, did you see that river?), but the class, style and efficiency of the venue and its team always pervails.  I shall miss the Cove as the snow begins to fly, but I’m also looking forward to some time at the Whiskey Roadhouse this winter.  Keep your eyes and ears open, I’m not going far, you’ll be hearing from me again – very soon!!!
