If you had told me that I would be attending a Snoop Dogg concert a couple of years ago, I would have said – yeah, sure. If you had told me that Thursday night I would be attending my SECOND Snoop concert in two years, I would have guffawed for hours.
Alas, that is exactly what happened when I rolled up to Stir Cove Thursday night for entertainment by this American rap icon. Who’d a thunk it?
I think Snoop likes to stir up his crowd into an impatient and rowdy frenzy prior to his arrival on stage. I think that no matter what time the concert is posted to start at, Snoop will choose exactly what time he wants to appear. Yet – the man does know how to make an entrance.
The speakers rise to ear shattering levels, the bass tones can be felt from head to toe and you feel like your heart is pounding from the outside. And then, amidst an epithet laden intro, he saunters onto his platform and immediately all the hands are in the air and heads are bouncing. Not a soul is in their soccer chair and the dirty dancing is everywhere. This, I believe, is exactly what the man intends to happen, and for the rest of the night, it’s non-stop. He seems happiest when the crowd repeats his name, or maybe it’s when he repeats his name – whatever – he does love the stage, and Thursday night his throngs loved him.
I think most of the media darling’s hits were there, but frankly, I can’t really tell one from another. I did hear Gin & Juice, which I must say I’m moderately familiar with, but beyond that it all begins to blend together for me. There’s plenty of profanity for the tender of ear, and references to various relatives and illegal substances, but it all just feeds the frenzy that his fans appreciate.
Don’t get me wrong – he gave his audience a great show, the audience gave him great appreciation and I think any and everyone who loves rap and who loves Snoop thought it was a fabulous show. My buddy Bob liked it so much, he bought himself a West Coast t-shirt just like the one Snoop sported in the spotlight Thursday night.
The house was nearly full and very diverse. This is one of the reasons I love Stir Cove. They have the ability to draw from all walks of life both in their entertainers and in their crowds. It’s a great time to mingle. People you don’t know, people you have never seen will talk to you, share a high five or beer can toast. Harrah’s has created another ‘happiest place on earth’. You just gotta go for yourself and check it out.
So – if Snoop comes back again – will you see me there? You betcha. Despite my limited rap expertise, I still know a good show from a not so good show – and there was plenty of goodness going around at Stir Cove on Thursday night.
