On New Year’s Day, while a significant part of the city was ensconced on their sofa watching the magic that is/was Tim Tebow, I chose to ring in the New Year with my friends from The Nightmare Paradox at their recording session at Make Believe Studio. Wanna talk magic?
We are all so very spoiled. We go to the store, we pay about $15 for the music of our choice, we climb into the car, pop it into the CD player and rock on. We don’t think about the complexities that go into the creation of that little disc.
I’m here to tell you, it’s not a quick or easy process. It’s not as simple as standing in front of a microphone and belting out some lyrics; there is exact precision and timing that must occur before you can say ‘Yeah, that’s good’. …’that’s really good’.
The Nightmare Paradox expects perfection from their performance, and lucky for them, Rick and Jeremy at Make Believe Studio have the same expectations.
I watched lead singer Aaron work repeatedly on one phrase, one word, one inflection just to make it right. I can only imagine how exhausting that is. He dug deep into his heart and soul for the perfect articulation and tone. Then, he did it again and again for a variety of other lyrical passages, knowing all the while exactly what he wanted and needed to do.
Then there was that refrain for a specific song that had to be sung 96 times by an octet just to create the layering compilation that sounds like a massive throng of voices. That sentence alone was in my head – and my dreams – for about three days! (Not that I’m complaining – it was a very cool thing to watch and wonder over.)
My point is that perfection begets perfection. The Nightmare Paradox so desires this debut CD to be professional, precise and potent, that they were willing to drive and drive and drive until the sound meets the desired approval of each member.
Again, I am so impressed with the business acumen and passion that TNP has. I, too, am very impressed with those same traits in the guys that run Make Believe. TNP did their homework when looking for a studio and they got it so right. There is such a synchronization of desired outcomes that you’d think these fellas had been working together for years.
The next venture for TNP will be a trip to upstate New York to edit their work. I can’t wait to get the inside scoop on that process as well. The guys have promised to share the lowdown on their trip, from the day they board the bus to the day they return.
While they are working in New York, I’ll give you some better insight into each of the members of TNP so that you can grow to love them like I have.
Don’t forget, there’s gonna be one heck of a CD release party at Sokol on March 24 that will mark the end of this journey. I’ll also bring you up to speed on those details in due time.
Keep watching omahanightlife.com for more action and details. I am having a great ride with The Nightmare Paradox, and I want you to cruise right along with me!
